IDAHO NEWS DIGEST
Courts & Legal
An Idaho judge has ordered Attorney General Raúl Labrador to be deposed in a whistleblower lawsuit by ex-deputy AG Daphne Huang. The judge also sanctioned Labrador’s office for skipping a prior deposition and failing to file a timely motion.
An Idaho Falls man was sentenced to up to 25 years for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl, resulting in a pregnancy. Jaime Campos pleaded guilty, but the judge rejected a lighter sentence due to the case’s severity.
State Government & Military
Governor Brad Little welcomed the USS Idaho crew to the Capitol as he commissioned the state-of-the-art nuclear submarine. The USS Idaho features a silent magnetohydrodynamic drive. Little also unveiled a commemorative license plate honoring the sub’s commissioning.
Community Recognition
Idaho’s best-tasting water is heading to Washington, D.C.! The City of Castleford won top honors at the Idaho Rural Water Association’s Spring Conference and will now represent Idaho in the national “Great American Water Taste Test.”
Energy & Utilities
Idaho Power is proposing a price cut of over 8% for residential customers. If approved by state regulators, the new rates would begin June 1, saving the average customer nearly $10 a month. The decrease reflects annual adjustments tied to power supply costs.
Education
Idaho lawmakers approved 5% raises for K-12 teachers and staff, but most educators likely won’t see that full bump. Local school boards must now negotiate pay based on district budgets, staffing levels, and salary minimums, meaning actual raises will vary widely.
Elections & Registration
Tomorrow is the deadline to register online for Idaho’s May 20 local election. Voters must register at VoteIdaho.gov to request an absentee ballot by May 9. In-person registration is still available on Election Day with valid ID and proof of residency.
Public Health
This Saturday, April 26, from 10 to 2, South Central Public Health and the DEA are hosting Drug Take Back Day at sites in Twin Falls, Jerome, Kimberly, Gooding, Heyburn, Hailey, and Ketchum. Safely drop off unused meds and help prevent misuse.
